An Exclusive Interview with Chris Engen
(Från About.com)

Oktober 2000

Keep an eye out for this hot newcomer (Chris Engen) who portrays the character of Finn on Felicity, Wednesday nights on the WB.

1. You're the newcomer in a cast that has had 3 years to bond, how has that been?

Chris: To be honest, it has been extremely easy. Everyone on the show, from the creators and producers to the cast and crew have been very friendly and welcoming.

2. Does Finn have a back story? Have you created one for him in your mind to help motivate yourself?

Chris: At present I don't believe he does, but as an actor I like to create one for him. I mean, to a certain degree the character is really up to the development choices of the writers, but I feel that the true grit of a character - the performance colors, the choices - those are entirely up to the actor. Maybe Finn is an only child, maybe he's the only child of six that gets to go to college. I don't know, but how much of that really comes out in people in day to day conversation? Basically, I just try to give him dimensions, and I look at every scene as something to accomplish for Finn. He should gain something, lose something, or a little of both in every scene, in my opinion.

3. Has anything surprised you about Finn and portraying him?

Chris: Yes. How much Finn is affected by the other characters on the show. Often I'll have a set idea of how I want to portray him, but then I'll get into rehearsal and Tangi will do something totally brilliant that takes the scene in an entirely different direction and I'll just go with it and end up somewhere I never thought I'd end up.

4. C'mon, we all want to know ... how difficult was that towel scene? How did you feel walking on set dressed like that?

Chris: Ahhh ... the towel scene. I was pretty comfortable with it honestly. Everyone kind of teases me about it, but it was a fun scene to do. It could have been worse - at least I had a towel, right?

5. What attracted you to the role of Finn? Are you finding it easy or difficult to fit into his skin?

Chris: I think it's a great character - It's a great show. I can't think of anything that wouldn't attract me to the character. I get to work with some of the most talented people in the entertainment industry. I get to be on TV. What more can I say? As far as fitting into his skin, I just take it a step at a time and just have fun with him.

6. What about working on the show has surprised you the most?

Chris: Wow. There are a lot of things. Although I'm a recurring character and not on the set every single day, everyone still treats me pretty much like family. I was also surprised at how much dedication and love is invested into the show by J.J. Abrams. The guy really gets his hands dirty and proves that the show is nothing less than the invested passion of everyone who is a part of it.

7. If you could play any role on TV, what would it be and why?

Chris: I suppose there are good and bad roles, but how much of that is determined by the actor? I look at every opportunity as a unique way of reaching people from a different angle.

8. What actor do you admire most and why?

Chris: I've always respected Paul Newman as an actor and a man. I think he represents what an actor should be on and off camera.
